BBQ Tofu Skewers

BBQ Tofu Skewers

Why should you soak your wood skewers prior to cooking?

Soaking wooden skewers in water before using them is important for a few reasons:

  1. Prevents burning: Soaking the skewers in water helps to prevent them from burning or catching fire while on the grill or in the oven. The water-soaked skewers create a barrier between the heat and the wood, which slows down the cooking process and prevents the skewers from burning.
  2. Prevents splintering: Soaking the skewers in water also helps to prevent them from splintering or breaking apart while cooking. The water softens the wood, making it less likely to split or break when you're threading the food onto the skewers.
  3. Allows for even cooking: Soaking the skewers in water can also help to ensure that the food cooks evenly. The moisture from the soaked skewers can help to keep the food from drying out too quickly, which can result in uneven cooking.

BBQ Tofu Skewers

Ingredients:

  • 1 block of extra-firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 1/2 cup Sgt. Hart's or Que Queen's Jammin' Reduced Sugar BBQ Sauce
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey (or agave nectar to make it completely vegan)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 wooden skewers

Instructions:

  1. Soak the wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes and place them in a large bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sauce, olive oil, honey (or agave nectar), apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. Pour the marinade over the tofu and toss gently to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or up to 8 hours.
  5. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
  6. Thread the tofu cubes onto the skewers, leaving a little space between each piece.
  7. Grill the skewers for 6-8 minutes on each side, or until the tofu is lightly charred and heated through.
  8. Brush the tofu with additional sauce during the last few minutes of grilling, if desired.
  9. Serve the skewers with extra sauce on the side for dipping.

 Enjoy!
